Serbia sits in the central Balkans, where the climate is mostly continental with a touch of Mediterranean influence. The best windows for visiting are April-June and September-October — comfortable temperatures, prices not yet at peak, and both monasteries and outdoor sites at their most enjoyable. Below is a season-by-season comparison.
Spring (April-May): blossoms and the monastery golden season
- Temperatures: 15-22°C by day, 8-12°C morning and evening — bring a light jacket
- Rainfall: more in April, mostly clear and stable in May
- Highlights: cherry blossoms in Belgrade's Topcider park (mid-to-late April), Fruška Gora monasteries and the fresh green of the vineyards
- Prices: just before peak, hotels are 30-40% cheaper. UNESCO monastery day tour is uncrowded
Summer (June-August): festivals, the coast, and serious heat
- Temperatures: 28-35°C is the norm in Belgrade, with peaks up to 38°C in July
- Festivals not to miss: EXIT festival (early July, Petrovaradin fortress in Novi Sad, top 10 globally), Guča Trumpet Festival (mid-August, the premier Balkan brass-band event), Sea Dance (Jaz beach, Montenegro)
- What to avoid: midday sun in Belgrade is brutal; the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro is extremely crowded in peak season — start early
- Prices: late June through late August is the most expensive 3-month window, hotels marked up 40-60%, flights also high
Autumn (September-October): the golden window and grape harvest
- Temperatures: 18-25°C by day, 10-15°C at night — the most comfortable window of the year
- Highlights: Fruška Gora grape harvest (mid-September), autumn colours in Tara National Park (October), the Tito Blue Train Belgrade-Užice winding through golden forests
- Prices: drop back to spring levels after the peak ends

Winter (November-March): skiing, Christmas markets, and Saint Sava day
- Temperatures: -5 to 8°C in Belgrade, snow from December to February; full ski season at Kopaonik and Zlatibor in the mountains
- Highlights: Kopaonik ski resort (December-March), Belgrade's December Christmas market (Trg republike), and Saint Sava day on 27 January (a national feast for Serbia's patron, with a major service at the Church of Saint Sava)
- What to avoid: some monasteries and outlying sites are closed in January-February; focus on city sightseeing
- Prices: outside ski season this is the cheapest stretch of the year — 4-star hotels in the city for 50-100 EUR per night
