Route overview

A classic loop designed for first-time visitors to China. In one trip you cross four of the country's most iconic cities — Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu and Shanghai — and walk away with a full picture of dynastic civilization, regional daily life, the giant pandas, and modern urban China.

Why this itinerary

Four flagship cities, one through-line. Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu and Shanghai are the four cities most international travellers come to China for. You meet all of them in a single trip and finish with a coherent mental map of the country.

Every must-see covered. Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Terracotta Army, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Panda Base, the Bund — every box a first-time visitor expects to tick is on the route.

Overnight sleeper trains + daytime high-speed rail. The default schedule uses train D19 (Beijing West 20:42 → Xi'an North 08:35 next morning), D1915 (Xi'an North 08:50 → Chengdu East 12:11) and D978 (Chengdu East 19:48 → Shanghai Hongqiao 08:58 next morning). That removes two hotel nights, avoids long airport transfers, and puts you at the next city's door ready to start.

Civilization and daily life, both. The route satisfies the high-recognition expectations of a first China trip while keeping room for local culture and ordinary city life. It is not a checklist run.

Signature sights

Beijing - Forbidden City

Beijing · Forbidden City
The single most recognisable opener of any first China trip — the fastest way to give international guests a feel for dynastic civilization.

Beijing - Great Wall

Beijing · Great Wall
Where the sheer scale and historical depth of "China" finally land. One of the strongest visual memories of the whole route.

Xi'an - Terracotta Army

Xi'an · Terracotta Army
Imperial scale and archaeological shock, side by side. The cultural anchor of the Xi'an leg.

Chengdu - Panda Base

Chengdu · Panda Base
Pandas make a China trip warmer and far more shareable. They also let the Chengdu leg shift from heavy history into easy daily life.

Shanghai - Bund night view

Shanghai · Bund by night
The Bund and the Huangpu River close the route on modern China — a clean transition from ancient capitals to international metropolis.

Day-by-day pace

D1 · Arrive Beijing. Airport pickup, hotel check-in, gentle start to set the rhythm for the trip.

D2 · Great Wall & imperial gardens. Juyongguan section of the Great Wall and the Summer Palace — ancient defensive engineering and royal aesthetics in one day.

D3 · Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven & overnight train to Xi'an. Finish Beijing's dynastic main line, then board train D19 sleeper (Beijing West 20:42 → Xi'an North 08:35 next morning).

D4 · Terracotta Army & Tang-dynasty night. Visit the Terracotta Warriors and Big Wild Goose Pagoda; the contemporary Tang-themed quarter at Datang Everbright City rounds off the day.

D5 · City wall & Muslim Quarter. Bell & Drum Tower square, the Xi'an City Wall and the Muslim Quarter — the older capital seen at street level.

D6 · High-speed rail to Chengdu. Take train D1915 (Xi'an North 08:50 → Chengdu East 12:11). Afternoon: Kuanzhai Alley and Liyuan teahouse for Chengdu's softer, more lived-in feel.

D7 · Pandas, Three Kingdoms & overnight train to Shanghai. Daytime: Panda Base, Wuhou Shrine, Jinli street. Evening: train D978 sleeper (Chengdu East 19:48 → Shanghai Hongqiao 08:58 next morning).

D8 · Classic Shanghai. Yuyuan Garden, City God Temple, Nanjing Road, the Bund and a Huangpu River cruise — reading Shanghai through its historical buildings and modern skyline.

D9 · Wukang Road & departure. A final walk under the plane trees in the historic concession district, then airport transfer.
